MAN DIES IN ROOFTOP PLUNGE
A 21-YEAR-old man died after plunging more than 30 feet off the roof of a disused warehouse in Haggerston last Saturday morning.
Gabriel Bailey, from Kensal Rise in north-west London, was visiting friends in Hackney Road when he fell from the building..
Witnesses saw people being led away by police officers afterwards. Cops say there is no evidence to suggest his death was suspicious.
A police spokeswoman said: "Five men, all from the roof, were taken to Stoke Newington police station for statements."
She added that a woman who was also on the roof at the time of the tragedy had been traced and had made a statement.
Mr Bailey fell off the back of the warehouse into the Perseverance Works village of artists' studios.
Shopkeeper Kamal Kalayci, who runs Shoreditch Food and Wine a few doors away, was on his roof when it happened.
He told the Gazette: "I'd just gone on to my roof as we had some problems up there and I heard shouting.
"I saw the police at the back and an ambulance and the guy was laid down on his back. I could tell his leg was broken as it did not look straight.
"He was alive when I saw him, but after two or three hours I went back and was told he was dead."
A spokesman for the London Ambulance Brigade said that a fast response unit of two ambulances and a heart vehicle were called to the scene at 10.33am after reports of a man falling from a building.
"He was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor," he said.
An undertaker took Mr Bailey's body away at 6.30pm. A postmortem found the cause of death to be head injuries.
"The family came on Monday morning," said Mr Kalayci. "His mum came with some flowers. I spoke to them and she said: 'The guy who died was my son'."
"The people had just moved in two or three weeks ago and he was visiting them."
Workers at the Perseverance studios said that squatters had moved into the building six weeks ago and had been holding all-night parties.
An inquest into Mr Bailey's death was opened at Poplar coroner's court on Wednesday and adjourned until November 19.
