A Gazette investigation has uncovered thousands of pounds in hidden costs from the council's junket to Beijing for the Olympic Games in the summer.

Five senior council officials including mayor Jules Pipe went to the Chinese capital on August 18 for a week-long trip, which was originally estimated to cost taxpayers £30,000.

But following a Freedom of Information request submitted to Hackney Council, the Gazette can exclusively reveal that an extra £7,500 of public money was spent during their time there.
