DROP IN KNIFE CRIME
HACKNEY police say they are tackling knife crime in the borough with increasing success.
There were 508 knife offences from April last year to March 12 this year, compared with 612 offences in the same period the previous year, representing a 17 per cent reduction.
Chief Supt Steve Dann, of Hackney police, said that his officers employed a wide range of tactics to contribute to the drop.
He added that Hackney had the sixth highest rate in the capital of solving knife crime. The force operates a policy of charging every individual found with a knife.
Hackney's top cop urges parents to speak to their children about their behaviour and their friends to help police continue to reduce the number of knife offences.
The borough force's tactics for combating knife crime include enforcement operations, intelligence-led stop and search, high visibility patrolling by safer neighbourhood teams and engagement with young people through a number of initiatives.
