THE FUNERAL is being arranged of Chris Harman, one of the world's leading Marxist writers who lived in Hackney most of his life.

Mr Harman, who lived in De Beauvoir, passed away in Cairo, Egypt, on November 6 aged 66 after suffering a heart attack following a speech to Socialist academics.

He was considered to be hugely influential and was editor of the publication Socialist Worker for more than 20 years, edited the journal International Socialism from 2004, and was active in protests including the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Stop the War Coalition.

Mr Harman, a dad-of-two, moved to Hackney in the late 1960s and lived in London Fields before moving to De Beauvoir.

His daughter Sinead Kirwan, 24, attended London Fields Primary School and Kingsland School, in Shacklewell Lane, Hackney.

Mike Simons, 54, of Clapton, also a member of the Socialist Workers Party, said Mr Harman was a 'great thinker loved and respected by all'.

He said: "Chris was a globally-renowned author and journalist in the Socialist movement.

"He was a very sharp intellectual, a very well-rounded human being and a great friend loved by all his family and friends.

"Chris was as happy discussing tactics and strategy with workers fighting to defend their living standards as he was sitting in the garden enjoying a BBQ."

Mr Harman wrote a number of books including A People's History of the World, Class Struggles in Eastern Europe, and a history of the German Revolution 1918-1923 called The Lost Revolution. His work was translated and printed across the world.

His last book, Zombie Capitalism, about the global economic crisis, was published this year.

He leaves daughter Sinead, who lives in Haringey, son Seth Harman, 40, of Clapton, and five-month-old grandson Max Kirwan, as well as partner Talat Ahmed, who also lives in De Beauvoir. Mr Harman would have celebrated his birthday on November 8.

His funeral will take place at Golders Green Crematorium on a date to be arranged.
