Schools make the grade
HACKNEY'S finalised GCSE results for last summer were released on Thursday.
The revised figures show improvements for five of the borough's eight secondary schools for students achieving five or more A*-C grade GCSEs.
The most improved result came from students at Haggerston Girls' School, who increased the number of pupils gaining five A*-C grades by a massive 14 per cent compared to the previous year.
The results come in the wake of strong opposition from pupils, teachers and parents to The Learning Trust's proposals to change Haggerston Girls' to a mixed school.
As a result, five students from the school in Weymouth Terrace, have been invited on a free trip to the London Eye with the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, and the government's London schools minister, Lord Andrew Adonis.
They will also be celebrating the success of the London Challenge Strategy scheme, which was launched by the Department for Education and Skills back in 2003 and identified Hackney as one of five key boroughs needing to improve its GCSE results.
Six of Hackney's secondary schools now have more than half of their pupils gaining at least five A*-C GCSEs, in comparison to three in 2004 and just one in 2002.
However, the borough still falls short of the average across England, with 47.2 per cent of pupils achieving five A*-C grades in Hackney, compared to 56.3 per cent around the country.
