No more room on top
 | | The Routmaster bus is set to disappear from Hackney |
OLD-fashioned Routemasters with conductors are to become a thing of the past as of the weekend after next when the number 38 is to be replaced by so-called "bendybuses".
The bus route, which runs from Clapton Pond in Lower Clapton to Victoria and serves some of the borough's busiest areas, including central Hackney and Dalston Junction, will be replaced by a new, 18-foot-long bus from the morning on Saturday, October 29 .
The buses which operate out of the Arriva garage in Narroway, Mare Street, Hackney, will continue along the same route, but will no longer require a conductor, leaving 120 people who work on the route redundant.
Helen Bruce, a member of the Routemaster Association and owner of an old Routemaster bus, said that both she and the association would be sad to see the buses go.
"Routemasters are a big part of London life and are about as well known as Big Ben as a symbol for the capital," she said.
"The whole point of them is that they are specially designed to run on the streets of London, unlike these longer buses that really are designed for long boulevards which we don't have in London.
