NATURE lovers are up in arms over the felling of trees as part of a major restoration project at a Hackney church.

Eugene Clerkin, of the Tree Musketeers, an organisation set up to protect trees based in Queensdown Road, Lower Clapton, is angry that 72 trees are set for the chop.

The felling is the first part of works being carried out at the 731-year-old churchyard gardens in St John at Hackney in Lower Clapton Road, which is managed by Hackney Council.

"We're totally outraged and very saddened because there's no proper reason for this," said Mr Clerkin.
