No need for speed
 | | Children demonstrate on Fairholt Road |
BANNER-WAVING children demonstrated outside their school gates on Tuesday morning to back controversial council plans for a 20mph speed limit in parts of Stamford Hill and Stoke Newington.
Youngsters at Sir Thomas Abney Primary School in Fairholt Road brought their bikes and dressed up as police officers, lollipop men and women and motorcycle cops to show their support for the proposed scheme, which involves narrowing some roads and installing speed humps and speed tables in 15 streets within a mile of the school.
The school's parent, teacher and student association organised the protest to coincide with a national 20 Is Plenty day of action at schools across the country and to show what they claim is the "overwhelming support" for the proposed 20mph zone.
It completely contradicts the views of Conservative ward councillors and 850 residents who have signed a petition opposing the scheme.
The council says a 20mph zone will cut road accidents by reducing rat-running motorists in an area which has three state schools and a high number of private Jewish schools situated there.
