Give us your land
THE 2012 Olympics came a step closer this week as businesses and landowners in Hackney were issued with compulsory purchase orders.
Thirty-five businesses in Hackney Wick, the Waterden Crescent travellers' park, the Manor Gardens allotments and the East Marsh area of Hackney Marshes have been ordered to move out by the LDA (London Development Agency), who have been given the job to ensure the land is delivered for the 500-acre Olympic park for the London Games.
The park, which is to include an aquatics centre, a velodrome, three sports arenas, a hockey centre, media facilities and an Olympic village in which 17,800 athletes and officials will be housed, will extend across four boroughs - Newham, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, as well as Hackney, including the area around Waterden Road and the River Lea.
This leaves an uncertain future for many businesses who have been given no option but to find alternative premises.
