A CLUBBER was shot dead at a friend's birthday party and a man was killed in a drive-by attack during a horrifying weekend of gun violence in Hackney.

Arian Arthur, 22, from Clapham in south-west London, was shot in the packed basement of a Shoreditch nightclub in the early hours of Saturday.

He was taken to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel and pronounced dead on arrival.

Less than 24 hours later, police were called to reports of gunshots in Stoke Newington. Darren Ogiste, 20, from Barnet, north London, and a friend, 23, had been shot at from a passing car in Defoe Road. Mr Ogiste died later in hospital.

Officers from the Met Police's Operation Trident, which probes gun crime in London's black community, said the incidents were not linked. No arrests have been made in connection with either shooting and detectives are appealing for witnesses.

The first happened at the popular Jam bar in Shoreditch High Street, which has been closed until further notice. Police believe Mr Arthur had been celebrating at a private party in the packed basement when a fight broke out at 5.30am.

The second shooting happened at 1.30am on Sunday in the heart of Stoke Newington's nightlife scene.

Several shots were fired from a silver car, which pulled up alongside Mr Ogiste and his friend at the corner of Defoe Road.

Both men staggered into Stoke Newington Church Street and Mr Ogiste collapsed outside Church Street Supermarket.

The two men were taken to hospital but doctors were unable to save Mr Ogiste's life. A postmortem held at Poplar mortuary on Monday revealed that he died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

The second victim left hospital on Tuesday.

Anyone with information on the Shoreditch killing should call the Trident incident room on 020 8733 4704. Witnesses to the drive-by shooting in Stoke Newington should call 020 8785 4702.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
