An illegal immigrant who followed a barmaid into her flat and subjected her to a brutal sexual assault has been ordered to serve at least three years behind bars.

Taylan Kegis, 24, forced his victim to the ground, molested her and left her lying unconscious on the stairs.

Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith sentenced Kegis to an indeterminate prison term for public protection after he admitted counts of sexual assault and assault causing actual bodily harm.

The judge described the attack as "violent, degrading and humiliating" and ordered that Kegis serves at least three years in jail before parole can be considered.

Prosecutor Linda Strudwick told Southwark C rown Court how Kegis crept up on the 26-year-old as she let herself into her flat in Dalston on February 1 this year.

She was chatting to her boyfriend on her mobile phone when she was grabbed from behind and subjected to a serious sexual assault

Kegis, from Tottenham, north London, was arrested at his home soon afterwards following a DNA match.

He was working as a grocer and living in Britain illegally. He gave police a detailed false account of how he had been seduced by a Polish girl.

However. a witness, who had been drinking at the West End pub where the victim worked, came forward to help destroy the defendant's case.

The traumatised victim has since had to leave the country in a bid to put her ordeal behind her.

Kegis was also ordered to sign on the sex offenders' register for life and the judge added that he would be recommending him for deportation.
