PLAN TO SCRAP BENDY BUS ROUTE
 | | Back to double deckers? |
New plans are set to see the bendy bus scrapped from a key commuter route through Hackney.
The number 38 bus, which runs from Lower Clapton through Dalston to central London, is set to revert to the traditional double-decker after London mayor Boris Johnson made the idea of replacing the buses a key pledge of his election manifesto. The route was a double-decker until three years ago.
Mr Johnson is consulting on the plans because he believes the buses are a danger to cyclists and are seen as a free ride by fare-dodgers. The number 38 has been earmarked as the first to go, along with two routes in south London.
Jennette Arnold, London Assembly member for Hackney, visited Clapton Pond last Thursday morning to canvass the views of commuters.
She said: "I would like to know what bus users' worries are in relation to these plans. Do they think bendy buses provide better and quicker access and should, therefore, stay, or are they of the opinion that double deck buses are safer and cause less congestion and should return on this route?"
Opposition politicians have warned that the move could mean more crowded and slower journeys and higher ticket prices.
Consultation on the three bus routes ends next Friday (October 3). People can make their views known by visiting http://FreeOnlineSurveys.com/rendersurvey.asp?sid=86dh3y2h5tmw766481854.
