METRIC MARTYR TO APPEAL
A MARKET trader is lodging an appeal against her conviction for selling vegetables in lbs and oz at her stall in Ridley Road market.
'Metric martyr' Janet Devers is hoping to overturn her conviction after the Government said it would stop traders being prosecuted for using the old-style imperial measures to sell goods.
Ms Devers, 64, of Wanstead, was convicted on eight counts last month, but has lodged her appeal at Thames Magistrates Court in a bid to force a climb-down on other cases, including her brother Colin Hunt who was prosecuted for similar offences in 2001.
Her appeal is backed by the Metric Martyrs campaign which describes her case, the last before the Government decided on a u-turn in policy, as "an anomaly and a huge injustice".
