Spring this year is a fully female season at Hoxton Hall and the perfect way to celebrate the centenary of female suffrage.

Female Parts put women front and centre.

“This wonderfully interconnected season shouts loud and proud with a host of roaring women that we’re eager to share with you,” says Karena Johnson, Artistic Director and CEO of Hoxton Hall.

Currently running is all-female musical Oranges & Elephants, by local writer Lil Warren and directed by Susie Mckenna.

Inspired by the tale of two Victorian girl gangs, a turf war erupts between the Forty Elephants and the Oranges.

“When you think about Victorian times, history is generally taught is from a male point of view. But the Forty Elephants were a matriarchal gang, and these women took control,” Lil Warren told the Gazette last month.

Another highlight of the season is the Female Parts: Shorts series, three short confessional monologues exploring what it is to be a wife, mother and immigrant and directed by Karena Johnson. A Woman Alone, written by Franca Rame and Dario Fo and translated by Gillian Hanna, is a tragic farce about a housewife imprisoned in her home by her “loving” husband. The comedy makes serious commentary on freedom, misogyny and power.

A Mother, written by the same pair and translated by Ed Emery, speaks of a woman who discovers her son is a terrorist and contemplates her part in his path there.

The Immigrant, written by Oneness Sankara, follows an accomplished Caribbean pioneer who, instead of being praised as a role model, is portrayed as a ruthless career woman and neglectful parent.

The Funny Women Awards return to start off the comedy programme with the London regional finals on February 22–23 and a Stand Up to Stand Out workshop on February 24. Funny Women has been running this workshop for eight years, teaching tricks of the trade, building confidence and developing your own performance style. Winner of 2015 Funny Women Stage Award Desiree Burch brings her show Unf*ckable on March 2.

The venue’s first club night debuts on March 3. Organic Nubians Club Night has an all female line-up of DJs including DJ Nubuan Soul and DJ Marcia Carr.

As well as special renditions of Hoxton Hall’s regular offerings Ms Paolini’s Phantasmagoria Cabaret, Jazz Verse Jukebox and Swing, two debates complete the season. Tonic Theatre’s talk series Tonic Celebrates gives audiences a chance to speak with leading women in theatre; and Women-ish invites audiences from 16-26 to discuss issues affecting young women today.
