The International Weird Collage Show is coming to London for the first time in February, putting down roots at Shoreditch’s Jealous Gallery.

Founded in 2010 by collage artist Max-o-matic (Maximo Tuja), the show has been a great success in cities around the world, visiting New York, Berlin, Barcelona, Madrid, Montreal, Rotterdam, Trondheim and Lima.

Now from February 1 to 11, the exhibition will showcase some of the world’s most interesting and revolutionary contemporary collagists, looking at redefining how the art form is expressed. It will be curated by Max-o-matic and London artist James Springall, a collage artist himself who uses humour, tragedy and social commentary to investigate alternative narratives around modern life. His work has been shown at the Saatchi Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts.

Joining him on the roster are 24 artists from the UK, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Canada, Peru, USA, Norway, Italy and Denmark/Ukraine.

Sergei Sviatchenko, hailed as “one of the most influential innovators of modern collage”, was born in the Ukraine and works not win Viborg, Denmark. He uses everyday objects through photography and collage to talk about the visual overload that consumers nowadays experience on a daily basis.

Ashkan Honarvar’s work looks at humankind’s inherent ignorance, magnified by vanity, asking questions about what we really know about ourselves and the world around us. The artist was born in Shiraz, Iran and works now in Norway.

From Manchester, visual artist and print maker Sarah Hardacre investigates post-war architectural legacies and industrial housing development and the concept of failed utopias. She questions how structures designed to create sense of community and togetherness have become symbols of alienation, marginalising working class communities, and women in particular.

Joining them are the UK’s Jono Boyle, Sarah Bridgland, Joe Webb and Maxwell Sterling, Cless and Ruben B from Spain and Elisa Vendramin from Italy. For a full line up of artists go to theweirdshow.info.
