Hackney Paralympian swimmer Dervis Konuralp also attended the Personal Bests athletics competition which saw around 700 young athletes aged 9-11 try to beat their own records in long jump, triple jump, javelin, shot, discus, speed bounce and Paralympic sport boccia.

Kingsmead Primary School were crowned the winners for achieving the greatest number of personal bests whilst Woodberry Down Primary were runners up and Harrington Hill School came third.

Cllr Guy Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, said: “Personal Bests has really captured the competitive spirit of the Games and the imagination of Hackney’s young people and it has gone from strength to strength since its launch.

“The event has been a huge success story and this year’s competition has been the biggest yet.”

Over 3,000 primary school children participated in the Hackney Council programme which promotes healthy living and exercise.

The event also saw the first performance of the Hacknee dance, which will be performed by thousands of people in Clissold Park to welcome the Olympic torch to Hackney on July 21.
