Shoreditch police station will close by the end of the year, in cost-cutting measures to slash £400million from the Met’s budget.

Hackney will be left with just one front counter in Stoke Newington and fewer neighbourhood contact points as part of the London-wide plans, it was announced today.

The Mayor’s Office for Policing And Crime (MOPAC) which consulted on the plans until October 6, estimates £170m of capital could be raised by closing “underused” front counters and selling “expensive to run” buildings that “only support back-office activity”.

As well as the station in Shepherdess Walk, five smaller local bases will also be “disposed of” in the plans: in Haggerston Road and Orsman Road in Haggerston; Shacklewell Lane in Dalston; and the Urban Hive in Theydon Road, Upper Clapton; as well as the shared Hackney Service Centre.

Green London Assembly Member Sian Berry criticised the decision, saying it was made “within just three weeks off the back of a rushed consultation”.
