Hackney police are warning people to beware of “hugger muggings.”
The advice comes after a wave of iPhone snatches in the street by youths who appear to be over friendly strangers.
A Hackney police spokeswoman said: “The police here have made up the term for people who have that drunk look about them, and fall against you as if you are their friend - but they are pick pocketing you at the same time.
“It’s a warning to everyone to be aware of their belongings as they are out and about.”
A severely epileptic boy and his family were evicted from their home and split up last week due to bureaucratic rules – despite pleas from medical staff warning that the move could cause him to suffer life-threatening fits.
