Adebambo Aderonke Adesanya, 48, from the De Beauvoir Estate, was arrested by Border Force officers at Heathrow Airport on February 4 this year, as she was about to board a flight to Tokyo.

While carrying out checks on baggage, officers had noticed that the base of her suitcase seemed unusually thick, and when it was spiked and a white powder substance came out.

Tests revealed the substance was methamphetamines and around 1.7kg was recovered.

If cut and sold in Japan, the drugs would have had an estimated value in excess of £1m.

Adesanya pleaded guilty to attempting to export a class A drug and was sentenced by a judge at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday 8 June.

Peter Avery, of the Home Office’s law enforcement agency Border Force, said: “This was a significant amount of class A drugs and it was the vigilance of Border Force officers which prevented this smuggling attempt from going ahead.

“Work with our law enforcement colleagues in the UK and around the world we are determined to do all we can to stop the international drugs trade.”

Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to drug smuggling should call 0800 59 5000.
