Hundreds of youngsters have learnt the value of campaigning after a lollipop lady and repainted zebra crossing were finally promised for their schools.

Calls for the safety measures in Hoxton have been ongoing for four years, led by St Monica’s Catholic Primary School, Randal Cremer Primary School, St John the Baptist Primary school and St John’s Church – all members of Citizens UK.

And last week they were all in Hoxton to see Hackney’s two deputy mayors commit to the measures.

Cllr Anntoinnette Bramble and transport chief Cllr Feryal Demirci committed to a range of measures. Cllr Demirci even got into the spirit of things by wearing an additional item of safety clothing for every measure signed off.

Randal Cremer head Jo Riley said: “It is great to see local schools working together. We want our children to know that they can make a difference.”

Revd Graham Hunter, vicar of St John’s Church, Hoxton said: “I’m sure some of these children will go on to become our next generation of community leaders and politicians.”

Lucy Blewett, head of St John the Baptist, added: “We are immensely proud of our children, staff and community. A true example of social action!”
