The Dalston Eastern Curve Garden has launched an appeal to find a giant pumpkin to take pride of place at its annual lantern festival.

Every year there are one or sometimes even two giant “show-stopper” lanterns carved out of huge pumpkins donated by Hackney resident John James, who grows them on his allotment.

Last year one was transformed into a magical “Cinderella’s coach, and the second became the Curve garden, complete with carved pizza oven, giant pom-poms and Stik man street art.

But this year John’s pumpkins failed to grow.

Marie Murray, who organises the show, said: “We’re hoping some Gazette readers might have grown a prize-winning pumpkin or know of anyone who might have one or even two to donate.

“Our pumpkin lantern show gets better every year, with hundreds of amazing lanterns carved by Hackney residents.”

Free pumpkin carving sessions take place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October, and they will all be lit up on the Sunday evening.
