A Hackney filmmaker who used to work on the X Factor has won a competition with 90 seconds of footage showing a slightly different singing show.

Jamie Jones came first in the Film London in 90 Seconds competition which was announced at the Best of Boroughs Film Awards ceremony at BAFTA in central London on Wednesday (Sep 7).

The 34-year-old of Dunlace Road, Lower Clapton, impressed the judging panel with his film Birdcage about the popular karaoke pub of the same name in Colombia Road in Shoreditch.

The short film follows three people who live in inner city east London as they prepare to take the stage.

The idea just came to me as I was sitting in the Birdcage and watching them all singing, said Jamie, who worked for X Factor production company talkbackThames before leaving to focus on documentary work.

There was such a difference between the regulars and the young fashionistas but the two walks of life complimented each other quite well.

When making the film, I found a lot of these guys were really humble - and had quite isolated, lonely lives. But when they sing they feel connected to something bigger.

I guess the difference with the Xfactor is that for the performers at the Birdcage, it is not about fame and money. It is about letting go.
