Hackney residents joined ex-service men and women to remember the fallen at the borough’s Remembrance Sunday parade and church service on Sunday,

The Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Rosemary Sales, led a parade of 600 from the Town Hall in Mare Street to St-John-at-Hackney Church in Lower Clapton Road.

Normandy Veterans, Royal British Legion and local associations like the Jewish Lads and Girls Brigade Band and the Red Cross all took part.

At the church, the Speaker Rosemary Sales Mayor of Hackney Philip Glanville and MP Meg Hillier lay wreaths at the Cenotaph to commemorate those who lost their lives during conflicts.

Rabbi Tiefenbrun of Hackney and East London synagogue sang the Jewish Prayer for the Dead and the group was also addressed by David Pollock of the British Humanist Association and Jagmohan Singh Bhakar of the Sikh Centre.

Rev Al Gordon led the church service and the parade made its way back to Hackney Town Hall for the traditional march-past and salute and laying of a wreath at the war memorial.

The Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Rosemary Sales said: “It was a great honour to represent the borough at Remembrance Sunday and to take part in such a moving ceremony.
