Flames were 50 feet high as 80 firemen battled a blaze in a kitchen cabinet makers’ in the heart of Shoreditch.

The two-storey factory in Garden Walk, Rivington Street, owned by Alfred Sleger, was extensively damaged in the fire and the roof was wrecked.

The alarm was raised by the owner of a cafe.

A SOS was radioed to the Lambeth HQ of the Fire Brigade, and brought help from outlying stations.

The factory was well alight when crews from Shoreditch and Whitechapel arrived at the scene, and embers were falling onto buildings nearby.

Flames threatened neighbouring buildings, which were broken into by firemen who positioned themselves inside to fight the flames from a number of angles.

It took two hours to get the fire under control.

Considerable damage was caused to the kitchen furniture and machinery.
