Last week, we reported that Hackney is the only borough in London where the number of public houses has risen since the turn of the century. Now a ’50s themed pub has sprung up in Stoke Newington to prove the point.

Be-Bop-A-Lula in Green Lanes is apparently London’s only ’50s Rock ‘n’ Roll public house.

It boasts a Wurlitzer jukebox with thousands of classics, and walls covered in memorabilia including artwork and posters from the era – featuring musicians like Gene Vincent, Fats Domino and Chuck Berry.

A rack of 30 old guitars is strung up above the length of the bar.

And it has diner booth seating, vintage TVs, record players, board games, a slot machine, and vintage lighting – all harking back to the glory years

The pub has been launched by the team behind The Alma movie-themed pub in Newington Green, and the Alfred Hitchcock themed pub North by Northwest in New North Road.

Owner James Patrick apparently came up with the idea.

Wesley Deaton, manager of the Alma, told the Gazette: “He loves rock and rock. Everyone loves rock and roll. There was nobody else doing it so it seemed like a good thing,” he added.

But is there a big enough market to sustain a themed pub in Green Lanes where there are no links to a main transport hub?

“Of course there is,” said Mr Deaton. “We wouldn’t invest time and money into it if we didn’t think it would work. There’s another pub across the street and other restaurants so there’s a lot going on in that area.”

The clientele so far has been “very mixed” with “all spectrums and all ages”.

There are plans to host live bands and quizzes and the restaurant is serving American diner classics with like a Be-Bop-A-Burger, Fats Domino Pizza and Hound Dogs.
