Hackney schoolgirl Sakinah Muhammad is among the delegation attending the Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony

A teenager from Hackney will help to bring the Olympic Flame from Athens to Britain.

Sakinah Mohammad, who turned 15 today as she travelled to Greece, is among a group of five young people accompanying former England captain David Beckham at the Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony tomorrow.

They will meet the official London 2012 delegation, led by the Princess Royal, and will also travel on the plane transporting the Olympic Flame from Athens to RNAS Culdrose on Friday.

The young people accompanying Beckham have been invited by London 2012 and the British Council.

While in Athens the young people, whose schools are all part of the London 2012 Get Set Education programme and school linking programmes run by the British Council, will also meet Greek youngsters from their partner schools.

Sakinah is a pupil at Clapton Girls’ Academy in Hackney, east London, which was chosen because it is supporting and learning about the Greek Olympic team in the lead-up to the Games.

Schools Sports Ambassador Sakinah said: “I am thrilled to have the honour of representing my country, London, Hackney, Clapton Girls’ Academy and my family in such a historic event.

“Being given this opportunity means so much to me as I’ve been looking for a way to get more involved in the 2012 Games.”

Seb Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), who is also going to Athens for the Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony which takes places at 7pm local time in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens tomorrow, said having Beckham and the youngsters involved was the right way to start the Olympic Torch relay.

He said: “We wanted to involve young people from across the UK in bringing home the Olympic Flame.

“Their stories of personal achievement and contribution to sport echo the 8,000 inspiring torchbearer stories that will be shared from this weekend and over the next 10 weeks in the build-up to the start of the Games.

“Working with one of our most inspiring sports people is also fitting for this hugely exciting time for the London 2012 Games.”

The other young people going to Athens are Scottish rugby player Dennis Coles, 17, from Doon Academy, Dalmellington, East Ayrshire; hockey player Chloe Brown, 18, from South Eastern Regional College in Bangor, Northern Ireland; Swansea Harriers athlete and Mumbles Rangers FC player Sean White, 17, from Bishop Vaughan Catholic School in Swansea; and Falmouth Ladies hockey player Georgia Higgs from Helston Community College, Cornwall.
