London 2012: Record passengers on DLR, transport will stay busy

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) carried a recorder 486,000 passengers yesterday, and Tube journeys are up by five per cent because of the Olympic Games.

The record figure for the DLR was reached on the first weekday of the Games, as events took place across the capital.

London’s transport system will continue to be busy over the coming days. Tomorrow Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins will be among those doing the Olympic road cycling time trials.

Roads in and around Hampton Court and Surrey will be very busy due to the event, Transport for London (TfL) has warned.

Both the men’s and women’s time trials will start and finish at Hampton Court Palace, affecting roads from 5am.

The women’s race is from 12.30pm to 2.15pm and the men’s from 2.45pm to 4.30pm.

The Jubilee line is also expected to be exceptionally busy from 3pm to 10pm, as events take place at venues including Wembley, Lord’s Cricket Ground, North Greenwich Arena, ExCeL and the Olympic Park.

Baker Street, Kings Cross and Green Park stations are expected to be very busy with spectators going to and from Wembley.

Tomorrow also includes four sessions of beach volleyball around Horse Guards Parade, which will lead to Central London being busy.

TfL is advising people travelling to or from the Olympic Park to consider using the District Line via West Ham or National Rail via Liverpool Street, as this may be quicker.

London’s transport commissioner, Peter Hendy, said: “Londoners are being more flexible with their journeys on public transport and we are very grateful to them for avoiding the busiest times.
