The lighting display on the bridge will go gold for 10 minutes just after 10pm, and the giant Rings on the River will be lit up in gold throughout the night.

This will happen each night during the Games when Team GB wins a top medal.

Great Britain’s first gold was won earlier today by Heather Stanning and Helen Glover in the women’s rowing pairs.

Boris Johnson, mayor of London, said: “Helen Glover and Heather Stanning’s historic triumph will be celebrated throughout the country today.

“Not only have they achieved the first gold medal for Great Britain at London’s Games, they have bagged the first ever rowing medal for Team GB’s women at an Olympics.

“It’s an outstanding achievement and I’m sure it will spur on all our athletes in the medal stakes. It’s fantastic - go Team GB!”

The Tower Bridge light show and the Rings on the River are part of Mayor of London Presents, the Mayor’s programme of free cultural events and attractions being staged across the capital to celebrate London 2012.
