It’s day two of the Jubilee Weekend, but with rain forecast the whole day, and temperatures not expected to rise above 11 degrees centigrade, is it going to be a Royal wash out?

There are 13 street parties approved for road closures by Hackney Council to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in the borough today, as well as many other estate fun days and picnics in parks.

Stoke Newington Church Street’s extravaganza was set to be one of the big ones, along with the Book Club bash in Leonard Street.

A big screen showing the impressive 1,000 strong flotilla of boats, ships and yachts on its way down the Thames this afternoon will be on show here.

At the Royal Party celebrations last year the Book Club party was officially declared the second biggest street party in the whole of London after The Mall.

Meanwhile if you’re not a Royalist and would rather celebrate Hackney’s dissident tradition, get along to the Stoke Newington Regicidal Literary and Music Fringe.

Instead of waving Union Jacks and pictures of the Queen, people here will be celebrating the life and death of Hackney citizen John Okey, who was hung drawn and quartered as one of 24 deemed unpardonable by the restored monarchy of 1662 for the regicide of Charles I.

“This is response to what we consider a remnant of empire and feudalism, and a consummate waste of money in these trying times – the Jubilee,” said joint organiser Pete Bennett.

“It’s also the fringe event of the Stoke Newington literary festival, because in all these mainstream events alternative writers seem to be overlooked, and what would a festival be without a fringe?

“Also in an age of kindle we are celebrating the printed text, in all its paper bound glory. Long live books!”

There will be a second hand book sale and bands playing in Praxis, 3-9 Belfast Road in Stoke Newington from noon.
