The diverse array of flavours from around the world on sale in Hoxton was the inspiration for an anthology of stories about Magical Mexican rice pudding and the Jollof rice rap.

A Story You Never Tasted Before is the culmination of a summer writing project organised by the Ministry of Stories (MoS), a creative writing project co-founded by Fever Pitch author Nick Hornby in 2010 to encourage children to write using their imagination.

The charity encouraged the youngsters to explore the market in Hoxton Street, where it is based, and invited their family to share their favourite recipes.

Local food businesses played a part, with children visiting Hoxton Bakery to learn how to make doughnuts and soda bread.

Programme leader Tarnia Mason said: “This project has very much been about bringing the local community together through the history of food.

“Many family members of our writers came in to share why a particular recipe was important to them so there’s been a real generational feel to the creation of the anthology.”

The launch saw the Ministry of Stories set up a stall in the busy Hoxton Street Market and young people read their stories out loud and shared their inspiration.

The book is available to buy for £5 in the Hoxton Street Monster Supplies shop, where the MoS is based, with all proceeds going directly to supporting more workshops.
