Drinkers at the historic Hoxton boozer which holds treasured memories to footballer David Beckham thought there may be cause for celebration this week, when the controversial application to alter it was withdrawn by property developers.

But Wenlock LLP is just revising its plans for the Wenlock Arms.

An application to convert the upstairs community room in the Wenlock Road pub into two luxury duplex flats with roof terraces was submitted in April.

It is currently used by diverse groups like the Stammerers’ Society and the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain, and pub punters fear complaints from future tenants about noise from the pub below their homes could infringe on the lively music nights the pub now hosts.

In response, Wenlock LLP wants to ask the council to remove “permitted development rights” which they say will preserve the building as a pub.

The pub itself would be revamped with a new kitchen, loos and flooring.

Andy Puncher from pH+ Architects said they were talking to Hackney Council’s planning department about revised proposals.

“I can’t talk about what we are changing, but we didn’t have a chance to discuss it in real detail with the planners, so we thought it was better to withdraw it and resubmit it,” he said.

Nearly 1,500 pub regulars and fans have signed a petition against the new plans.

Football star David Beckham was taken to the pub as a child by his late grandfather who lived nearby.
