Urgent preservation work to save a celebrated piece of street art will be carried out – despite fears that the building on which it is painted is unsafe.

The future of the iconic Dalston Carnival Peace Mural, which features on the cover of Hackney band Rudimental’s debut album Home, is at risk of coming away from the brickwork after years of vandalism and neglect.

But at a Dalston ward forum meeting on Monday night Hackney Council revealed plans to carry out urgent restoration work on the 1984 artwork on the side of 15 Dalston Lane, which is currently deemed structurally unsafe.

The project will be completed before £420,000 worth of structural renovations are carried out on the adjoining property and neighbouring buildings up to number 19 by Antic, a pub company which leases the row of three terraces.

Marie Murray, who manages the Dalston Eastern Curve garden next door to the mural and has been part of the campaign for its restoration, said: “We welcome the council’s plans to start work soon on a programme of restoration. At the garden, we have already been working on a programme of workshops with young people and children celebrating the
mural. We are now planning to work with the restoration artists to expand on the programme.”

Hackney Council has commissioned wall painting experts Hirst Conservation for the work and the company has hired Paul Butler, who worked with Ray Walker on the Battle of Cable Street mural in Tower Hamlets and was recently involved in its restoration.

The mural was designed by community artist Ray Walker in 1983 to celebrate the Hackney Peace Carnival but he died shortly afterwards. His widow Anna Walker and colleague Mick Jones completed the mural the following year.
