Kingfishers, dragonflies and fish could soon be thriving in Clapton thanks to a public vote on where a new reedbed should be planted along the River Lea.

The bed, which will clean the water and attract wildlife, is to be planted along the river by Essex Wharf – near Lea Bridge Road – thanks to waterways charity Thames21. Work will happen by September.

After 700 votes were counted, beds will also be planted in Edmonton, Tottenham and Bromley-by-Bow. Essex Wharf won 28 per cent of the votes – the second-highest of the five.

The charity’s Ben Fenton said: “What a great response. Nearly 700 people have taken the time to tell us where they want to see new reedbeds, and now they’ll have the chance to get involved in planting them too.

“We’re running free training to equip people with the skills to look after them into the future – check out the Thames21 event page for dates.”

The page is at thames21.org.uk/events.
