Work is underway to build 75 homes in Homerton, 28 of which will be for social rent.

Hackney mayor Phil Glanville broke the ground at Bridge House in Homerton High Street this week before builders Mulalley got to work. As well as the social rent homes, 39 will be for shared ownership and eight for private sale, to pay for the rest of the scheme.

The 28 social rent properties will provide a replacement council home for people on the same estate “whose ageing homes are uneconomical to repair”.

The rest will available to those on the council’s 13,000 strong waiting list or the 3,000 in temporary accommodation.

Mayor Glanville said: “This development shows Hackney is building and our regeneration approach works. We’re providing both brand new council homes alongside much needed additional homes for those most in need – all despite the complete absence of government funding.”

Bridge House is part of the council’s 18-site estate regeneration scheme providing almost 3,000 new homes.
