Lewis Sutherland, 21, Pa Sillah, 20, and Lascell Mckenzie, 19, were driven to a discount shop in Chatsworth Road in Lower Clapton on March 20 where they bought the seven-piece knife set.

They spotted their unarmed 16-year old victim as they drove down Lower Clapton Road and got out of the car to chase him, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.

He escaped but they finally caught up with him in Clarence Road, where Sutherland and Sillah set upon him with knives, while Mckenzie joined in the attack unarmed.

The victim suffered multiple injuries including a punctured lung, a lacerated liver, cuts to his thigh and lost a kidney.

Judge Stephen Wilkinson told the trio the attack “was as brutal as it was cowardly”.

“All three of you were bigger and older than he was and you were armed with knives,” he said.

“I am satisfied that this attack was premeditated and so find it because shortly before your attack, a stop was made and a packet of kitchen knives was purchased.

“There is some suggestion in the pre-sentence report that the victim of this attack may have been involved with some kind of rival gang.”

The court heard Sillah had been stabbed previously and that Sutherland had suffered brain injuries as part of an attack in his youth.

Sillah of Ruddington Close, Lower Clapton, Sutherland of Mandeville Street, Lower Clapton, and Mckenzie of Roxwell Road, Barking, all denied attempted murder but pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

They were each given 10 years and Sutherland got an extra two years for supplying class A drugs.
