Police believe the 37-year-old man who was knifed to death in Homerton yesterday had got into a dispute at a private party before being stabbed multiple times outside.

Emergency services were called at 8.15am when the victim was found in Towpath Walk, which runs alongside the Hackney Cut stretch of canal.

He was pronounced dead at the scene half an hour later.

Officers believe they know his identity, and are in the process of informing his next of kin.

A 30-year-old man, who was arrested yesterday on suspicion of murder, has now been released under investigation.

Det Insp John Marriott from the Met’s murder squad, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our initial enquiries have established that an altercation has taken place involving the victim and the suspect, who had both attended a private party at the location.

“It is thought an initial dispute has started inside the party but this has spilled on to the towpath by the River Lea where the victim has been stabbed.”

A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

Witnesses and anyone with any information are being urged to call the incident room on 020 8345 3715 or contact via Twitter @MetCC.
