Middlesex made inroads into the Warwickshire batting during the morning session on day two of the County Championship match at Lord’s – as wicketkeeper John Simpson took three catches to leave the visitors on 248-8 at lunch.

James Harris lured night-watchman Chris Wright (14) into a false shot before also removing Chris Woakes (7).

The England all-rounder, playing his first county match of the summer looked rusty on Sunday even if his bolwing efforts were not indicative of his final figures of 0-75. However the 29-year-old lasted only eight balls as the home side looked to wrap up the tail as quickly as possible.

Ollie Rayner then trapped veteran Kiwi Jeetan Patel lbw on 14 as he tried to sweep the big Middlesex spinner – who has recently returned to the club after a loan spell with Hampshire – as the 32-year-old grabbed his second wicket.

Prior to that the wily Tim Murtagh snared Tim Ambrose with a ball that swung away slightly using the slope as Simpson claimed the catch.

Will Rhodes, the mainstay of the innings, moved serenely onto an unbeaten 93 as he steered his side to a slender lead of 12 runs at the lunch interval.
