Confusion has reigned between Arsenal and Ligue 1 side Bordeaux on Tuesday regarding Brazilian winger Wellington Silva.

The player, who initially joined the Gunners as a 16-year-old seven years ago – with the club fighting off Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United for his signature – left the Emirates last summer to link-up with former Brazilian team Fluminense on a four-year deal.

However, the North Londoners insisted on a £1.5m buy-back clause – and decided to trigger the option when they became aware of Bordeaux’s interest in the wideman who failed to make a first team appearance in six years.

Arsenal were set to make a quick profit of around £1.42m – after fees were deducted – following Les Girondins bidding around £3m for his services.

However in a further twist Wellington failed the medical, leading the French team to tweet: “Following the medical examination, the club decided not to implement the transfer of Wellington Silva.”

Arsenal have yet to officially confirm whether they will be liable to underwrite the £1.5m buyout clause despite the move failing to take place – although club sources have indicated the club will not have to pay.

A statement issued by Fluminense club president Pedro Abad said: “The transfer of Wellington Silva from Fluminense to Bordeaux in France did not materialise because of a medical issue.

“During the medical examinations a small inflammation was detected in the pubis. It is not serious but the French club chose not to continue with the hiring.”

Wellington is already on his way back to Rio to re-join Fluminense later this week.

Silva endured a frustrating spell in north London after FA had backtracked on its initial decision to award Silva his ‘Special Talent Visa’ – leading to him being sent on loan to various clubs including Levante, Alcoyano, Ponferradina, Murcia, Almeria and Bolton Wanderers.

The uncertainty curtailed his progress, with the-then Bolton boss Neil Lennon slamming him for being ‘too lightweight’.

Unfortunately after the way events unfolded this week he can add another chapter to his frustrating career.
