Justin Edinburgh was happy to see Leyton Orient battle back to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw at home to League One outfit Southend United this afternoon.

The O’s fell behind in the 14th minute when Jason Demetriou come back to haunt his old side with a 25-yard strike which found the top corner.

It stayed 1-0 until the break, but Orient equalised soon into the second period when James Alabi won a penalty and Macauley Bonne sent Nathan Bishop the wrong way.

Chris Powell’s Southend went back in front with 63 on the clock when Tom Hopper headed home after Simon Cox’s chip had hit the crossbar.

But the east Londoners had the final say on proceedings when Alabi curled home from outside the area to score his first goal in E10.

Edinburgh said: “It wasn’t too long ago this was a League One fixture let alone a pre-season friendly, but we are fully aware of that and sometimes it is the check we need.

“It was a really good test and the toughest we have had this pre-season. There were periods where we knew we would be without the ball, but I thought we were organised and limited a very good League One side to few chances.”
