First day of the historic meet sees three Group One races

Day one of Royal Ascot is finally upon us, with plenty of Group One action from the off.

Last week, Archant London sat down with tipster Martin Girdwood of Girdys Gee Gees to discuss his naps for the week.

The first race of the entire meet is the Group One Queen Anne Stakes at 2.30pm, with Martin fancying Ribchester, ridden by William Buick.

The King’s Stand Stakes at 3.40pm is another Group One race with Martin believing Lady Aurelia, trained by Wesley Ward, is the one to watch.

Following that is the final Group One race of the opening day, the St James’s Palace Stakes at 4.20pm, with Martin tipping the Aiden O’Brien-trained Churchill for glory.

The opening day also sees the Coventry Stakes (Group Two) at 3.05pm, the Ascot Stakes (Handicap) at 5.00pm and the Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed) at 5.35pm.

For more in-depth analysis of Martin’s opening day tips, visit Girdys Gee Gees.

Be sure to check back here tomorrow for Martin’s guide to day two of Royal Ascot.
