Age was no barrier for a pancake day “shuffle-athon” in Well Street Common on Tuesday, as 101-year old Molly Carleton showed with her deft pancake flipping skills.
She wasn’t the oldest contestant however, and was eclipsed by a 105-year old at the event which has been a tradition for over 30 years.
“They had to flip the pancake as they were going along. Some of them were cheating as they were keeping their fingers on the pancakes so it wouldn’t fall,” said the organiser, the Revd Gualter De Mello from the Community of Reconciliation and Fellowship, which serves the needs of the elderly in South Hackney.
Participants went back to Prideaux House in Church Crescent for lunch, a singalong, and to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a Blind Date game based on the hit ITV show. The two lucky winners will be going out for a meal together as a prize.
