Scores of children last week celebrated their beloved adventure playgrounds being protected forever.
A new rule passed after Islington Council, charity Fields in Trust and Islington Play Association teamed up means the local authority will have to ensure the play spaces are replaced with “like for like” if the land which hosts the playgrounds is earmarked for sale or development.
To celebrate, children pictured at Lumpy Hill playground, in Market Road, had a BBQ, sports day, Mystic Meg tent and arts and crafts event on Friday evening.
Andrea Quaintmere, an adventure playground development worker, said: “It means that the children’s play space is now protected, well forever, because a playground would have to be replaced like for like in the event of sale or development.
“A lot of the playgrounds were developed in the 60s so it means a lot for these to be protected like this.”
Toffee Park, Crumbles Castle, Timbuktu, Martin Luther King and Hayward adventure playgrounds will also be protected along with other council play spaces in the borough.
