The top two clubs in the FA Women’s Championship will face off at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday

Spurs Ladies’ head coach Juan Amoros was thrilled with the team’s comeback on Sunday as they defeated Aston Villa Ladies 2-1 in the FA Women’s Championship at Cheshunt FC.

An Ashleigh Neville equaliser on the stroke of half-time and a late penalty converted by Rianna Dean meant Tottenham Hotspur extended their lead at the top of table by five points.

Speaking at full time, Amoros said “We definitely could have played better in the first half, we were reactive instead of proactive.

“We tried to sort it out at half time, and the goal from the set play at the end of the first half certainly helped us.

“I think in the second half we were a little more up for it, we changed our mentality and knew how important the three points were to us.”

After a slow start – falling behind to an early Villa goal from Kerri Welsh – Spurs got back into the game through Neville’s goal and Amoros hailed the importance of the equaliser before half-time.

“At 1-0, you are always in the game and we knew Villa were going to be tough and to be fair to them ,I think they will finish much higher than their position at the moment,” he added, with the visitors currently second bottom in 10th place.

“We knew the goal was going to be a massive boost for us and really help us going into the second half. We were able to carry on in the second half and managed to get the second goal to get the three points that I thought we deserved.”

Manager Karen Hills made four changes in Sunday’s game and Amoros was quick to hail the options that they have at their disposal.

He added: “We keep everyone on their toes and everybody gets there chance to be involved in the team which creates a great environment.

“One of the strengths we have is the belief we have in the squad and the belief the players have in their team-mates. At the end of the day we pick the best team that is going to get the three points.

“So far, we have got it right, but it is all down to the players out there on the pitch who have performed and got the points.”

The Lilywhites head to second-placed Manchester United Women this weekend and Amoros admitted the result last Sunday will give the team a boost for their important upcoming game.

“Going into the next fixture it’s a massive win for us, we are going to analyse United’s strengths and weaknesses and we are going to try to go and get three points there,” he finished.

“I know we have the quality to get three points against anyone, but we are going make sure it is a great occasion and a great game.”
