Sixth-form students in Stamford Hill surprised elderly residents of a retirement home with armfuls of flowers in a special Valentines Day treat.

Students from Our Lady’s Convent High School in Amhurst Park, took some time out to visit Jubb Powell House in Tottenham.

The flowers were arranged in hearts throughout the lounge and rooms of the home which is run by the Viridian Housing Association, and provides people aged 55 and over with sheltered housing.

Sam Jennings, Viridian’s volunteer manager, said: “It’s not just the flowers that brighten the room – it’s the smiles of the residents and the girls chatting together.”

In a bid to “bring generations together,” the girls have been visiting the residents for two terms as part of their RE syllabus.

This trip marked their final visit to the house.

During the weekly trips they talked to residents and learnt about flower arranging using flowers that were donated by Morrison’s.

It is hoped that the school’s relationship with Jubb Powell House will continue next year.

Marie de Vere, from Viridian, said: “Viridian Housing and Our Lady’s Convent share links with the Servite community and have the same ethos about helping others.”
