Young people will guide the audience on an immersive theatre journey exploring Hackney’s oldest building next Sunday.
The free 40 minute site specific performance of Clockworks: Lost Traces has been created by a group of 19-25 year olds and is inspired by St Augustine’s Clock Tower.
The Grade I listed building is the only surviving remnant of the old parish church of St Augustine, which was built at the end of the 13th century and demolished in 1798.
Hackney Council bought the tower from the church to save it from being bulldozed in 1929, and it appears on the borough’s coat of arms.
Performance group Newington Collective was awarded a grant of £18.300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to teach the young people about heritage and the arts, enabling them to learn new skills which may help them secure work or further education.
The performance takes place on Sunday December 8 with three free performances at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm.
