Guerrilla gardeners are hunting for keen green-fingered enthusiasts to join them transforming a derelict piece of land nicknamed The Lady Eve Community Garden.

The owner of the e5 Bakehouse, Ben McKinnon spotted the potential in the small plot on the corner of Mentmore Terrace and London Lane, nearby London Fields, and he has joined forces with local film maker Jamie Stones to turn it into a welcoming garden for all to enjoy.

“I used to stand across the road from the site mixing dough, and looking across all I could see were these ugly boardings behind which rubbish was steadily accumulating,” said Ben.

“I imagined how great a garden it could make, not only could it look attractive, it could also produce vegetables and herbs for passers by and provide habitat and food for insects and animals.”

The pair have already made a low perimeter wall and laid down seven tonnes of compost, and now they want volunteers to help make the garden ready for spring, by planning, digging painting and planting.

They hope this project might be the first of many guerrilla pop-up gardens in the area. To join in email LadyEve.e8@gmail.com
