Volunteers collected 20 bags of litter from a notoriously filthy two-mile stretch in Hackney Central last Friday.

The 21-strong team including coppers from Hackney Central Safer Neighbourhoods Team, students from Mossbourne Community Academy in Downs Park Road, members of the council and crew from three Hackney-based McDonald’s restaurants, pitched in to target Mare Street and its surrounding side streets.

Local McDonald’s franchisee Amir Atefi said: “As a local business man I see firsthand the negative effect litter has on the borough. It’s unsightly and no one wants it strewn across their local community, but litter is everyone’s responsibility.”

The event was part of the Mayor of London’s Capital Clean-up campaign, encouraging volunteers to help make the capital a cleaner, safer and greener place for the 2012 Games and beyond.
