A massive mural exploding with light and colour has been commissioned to brighten up a Haggerston neighbourhood undergoing redevelopment.
The frieze in Whiston Road which depicts leaping creatures and birds was painted in just three days by Nazir Tanbouli.
The commission to brighten up the hoarding surrounding a building site came from London and Quadrant Housing Association.
Egyptian-born Tanbouli, who is based at artist-run Studio 75 in nearby Laburnum Street, said: “A picture like this doesn’t have any great ‘concept’ or major purpose except to brighten up the street.
“For anyone living around here, having their tea and looking out their windows, it’s more likely to make their morning a bit more positive.
“I believe, as an artist, that is enough; it’s a good way to contribute to the society and to my locality.”
Tanbouli draws and paints but finds that murals – the bigger the better – are his favourite.
Studio 75 holds film screenings and exhibitions of both local and international artists.
