The River Thames will play host to a seven-and-a-half mile long boat procession next year, to celebrate the Queen’s 60 year reign, it has been announced.
A flotilla of up to 1,000 boats assembled from around the world will be led by the Queen from Putney to Tower Bridge on June 3 2012.
The Diamond Jubilee Pageant is expected to bring more than one million people to the banks of the Thames, and will be one of the focal points of the celebrations across the special bank holiday weekend.
It will be funded by private donations and sponsorships, administered through a specially created limited company, the Thames Diamond Jubilee Foundation, registered as a charity.
Roads, piers and bridges will be closed to traffic to allow the public to enjoy the spectacle from as many vantage points as possible, with fifty giant video screens being assembled along the route.
