FORGET the Oscars. Hackney had its own red carpet event this week starring young film makers from across the borough.
The 30 youngsters from Fellows Court and the Fawcett estate in Hackney premiered their short films at the Rio Cinema in Dalston on Saturday.
The ambitious project, Estate Vision: The Best of the Broadcasts, saw the youngsters direct and edit films about local issues close to their hearts. The topics ranged from gangs and education budget cuts to lighter issues such as hair weaving, cooking and rapping.
Experienced producers from Chocolate Films had also lent a helping hand making the movies.
Project Manager Ana Tovey said: “We’ve been really impressed with the programmes they’ve made and how they’ve got to grips with the technology.”
Sonia Bradley, youth coordinator at Hackney Homes, which helped fund the project, said: “The passion that the young people put into these films should be commended. They worked hard and this is clear through the quality of the films that they produced.”
